Sandburg Men Hit 14 3s, Shoot 59% in Blowout of St. Ambrose JV

The Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team shot 59 percent from the field and had five players score in double figures as it blew out St. Ambrose JV 97-57 Friday night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium for the Chargers’ first victory of the season.
KEY MOMENTS
- Sandburg (1-1) never trailed, scoring the game’s opening eight points on a pair of 3-pointers from freshman Gabe Mason (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) sandwiched around a Lane Ippensen (LaPrairie, Ill./Camp Point Central) tip-in.
- The Chargers added runs of 7-0 and 11-0 later in the half as they took a 45-23 lead into the locker room. Sandburg led by as many as 52 points in the second half.
SANDBURG STANDOUT
Freshman forward Jacob Reller (Rushville, Ill./Rushville-Industry) finished with 18 points while going 8 of 8 from the field. Reller also had five rebounds and a blocked shot.
OTHER TOP CHARGERS
- Mason scored 17 of his game-high 19 in the first half as he went 5 for 7 from 3-point range. The freshman also pulled down five rebounds.
- Freshman Griffin Ronnebeck (East Moline, Ill./United Township) matched Mason’s five 3s while finishing with 17 points. Ronnebeck finished 5 of 10 from long range as the Chargers hit 14 of 29 from distance overall.
- Sophomore Jean Luc Wilson (East Moline, Ill./United Township) scored 12, grabbed five rebounds and had a team-high eight of the Chargers’ 25 assists on the night.
- Sophomore Vaughn Toyne (Petersburg, Ill./PORTA) also scored a dozen points, doing so while making all six of his attempts inside the arc.
- Freshman Storm Hangen (Peoria, Ill./Manual) was the only Sandburg player who didn’t record a point, but he grabbed a team-best nine rebounds while added seven assists and three steals.
